Originally announced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, Driveclub unfortunately remains a ways off.
When it was delayed last year, there was evidence that the anticipated racing game might release in the February – April window. But PlayStation Worldwide Studios boss Scott Rohde now says that isn’t going to happen. According to what he told IGN, developer Evolution Studios has gone “back to the drawing board.”
He explained that if Sony shipped the game as it stands now, everyone would be disappointed.
“What I will say is that it all comes back to that fundamental principle, and that’s that we want to build great games. And we really don’t want to release a game before it’s ready. And sometimes, this happens in the normal course of business, where we think we’re on track to deliver what we think is going to be a great game, and when we get closer, we realize that we’d be doing everyone a disservice if we shipped it before it was ready.”
Rohde added that at PlayStation, “perhaps more than at other places,” they’re more willing to eat the cost of going back to square one, so they can be assured of delivering a great title. He wouldn’t say if the game would still release this year but I’m guessing it won’t happen.
And I’m okay with that. Get the game right. We’ve got plenty of stuff to play in the meantime.
