Nintendo has announced that amiibo, its new toys-to-life product line, has sold nearly as much as Super Smash Bros. Wii U in the United States alone.
Despite Nintendo declining to give the direct number, they did reveal during a press release that Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U has “sold nearly 710,000 combined units” since the release on November 21st in the US. Sale of amiibo was then announced as “approximately equal to sales of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.”
The three most popular amiibos out of the twelve released so far are Link, Mario and Pikachu, in that order.
The fact that amiibo are selling as well as Super Smash Bros. Wii U really says something about Nintendo’s ambition with their product. There is already a number of games released on the Wii U that support amiibo, such as Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, and Super Smash Bros. Wii U. It will be interesting to see the many different ways that Nintendo can incorporate amiibo into their games.
In other news, Nintendo has recently spoken up about already discontinuing certain amiibos, saying that the dropped amiibos “may return” to the shelves at a later date.
