Own3D.tv, a streaming website founded in 2009, will be closing its doors after announcing this morning that they will cease operations as soon as January 31st.
First reported last week, own3D.tv says on its blog that though they have tried to make a profitable and thriving streaming company, the growth in competition and the money heavy nature of the industry has not worked in their favor. All content will be deleted within 24 hours.
It’s very sad to see a pioneering company shut down, especially now that Twitch.tv will rule the market. Youtube offers a streaming service that is growing in popularity, but Twitch appears to be the dominating service. I am concerned about the state of streaming technologies, given that competition is required for growth and progress.
Many community members may not miss the streaming company due to the fiasco that occurred between own3Dtv and Destiny, a very popular Starcraft II/League of Legends streamer who published his very negative experience with them online on his blog, warning others not to do business with own3D.
Check out #own3D on Twitter to see the variety of community reactions. How do you feel this will affect the state of streaming? Where will current own3D users go?
