Animal Crossing: New Horizons will support Nintendo Switch Online’s smartphone app. The app enables voice chat in certain games, like Splatoon 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, along with offering a range of other game-specific features.
How it will be used in New Horizons isn’t quite certain, as the news simply comes from a new section added to the game’s page on the Nintendo of America website.
Not many games take advantage of the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app for voice chat. While that might be because it’s cumbersome and often not very reliable, it’s still a big step up from the in-game keyboard days of Animal Crossing: Wild World and way better than Wii Speak in City Folk.
Of course, using the app requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, but if you’re planning on visiting someone else’s island — on a separate Nintendo Switch — you probably have that already. Despite supporting Nintendo Switch Online, Animal Crossing: New Horizons won’t offer cloud save support.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about New Horizons, including what’s going on with the possibility of it offering in-game purchases. But we do know perusing our fan art roundup is a good way to pass the time until the game launches on March 20.
