Surely you’ve heard of Tetris, seeing as the series a gaming staple since the 1980’s. But what about Puyo Puyo, a kindred drop puzzle title rarely seen in the west?
Fellow importers of older console games should be familiar with the Puyo Puyo series — after all, it has been around since 1991 and was one of the premier drop puzzle games on the Japanese market for years. The series has a long and varied history, but even so it is surprising to see it combined with Tetris in a single game.
Gematsu has given a look at two screenshots of the upcoming multi-platform title, showing how these two puzzle giants come together.
Players will take turns playing either Puyo Puyo or Tetris, with the game modes being swapped mid-match. The winner seems to be decided based on score, or whether one or the other fills up the screen (and loses).
As someone who owns six games from the Puyo Puyo series, it’s exciting to see these two prominent international staples of the genre come together in one mega-drop puzzler. We may not have Compile developing the Puyo Puyo games anymore, but Sonic Team has done a decent job of continuing the legacy.
Puyo Puyo Tetris will be seeing a Japanese release on PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Wii U, and 3DS next year. Will we see a western release for this beauty? Here’s to hoping!
