You can take this Persona 4 Arena Ultimax best characters tier list to the bank.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is now available on PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. This version includes 22 characters, where each character has its own shadow version, which not only grants them higher HP, but also provides access to shadow burst attacks.

This guide will list only the best characters in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax for 2022. You will learn why certain characters are better than others, and why some of the previous top-tier characters have been nerfed but still retain their competitiveness.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax: S-Tier Characters

Yu Narukami

  • Weapon: Two-Handed Sword

Narukami is by far the best choice any player can make when it comes to selecting your main character in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Note that his shadow version is also very powerful.

Yu Narukami is the jack-of-all-trades, and probably the most balanced characters of all. He can be equally good in long range and close range combat.

His best moves are 2B and 5B, as well as his long range projectiles. His cancel move is now positioned as A+B unlike in the previous versions of the game.

Mitsuru Kirijo

  • Weapon: One-Handed Sword, Rapier

Mitsuro is the best midrange character in the game due to her excellent rapier move 5A. But this doesn’t mean that she can’t go further into a longer range, which is totally possible when using her persona.

Her charged 2B attack is also great, which increases her damage, although not too dramatically.

Her defenses, such as 5A backdash cancel move, are also great, and provide players with some fun mind games, where opponents get tricked into attacking but suffer as a result.

A-Tier Characters

Aigis

  • Weapon: Firearms

Although Aigis is a very strong character, she may not be a viable choice for beginners. She is hard to master, but she is well worth the effort.

The best and the most complicated thing, about Aigis is her Orgia Mode, which increases both her range and damage. Unfortunately, without the Orgia she can be quite mediocre and lacking defenses, which is why she is only tier A.

Sho Minazuki

  • Weapon: Twin Blades

Actually, Sho and Minazuki are two sides of the same character, but Sho has no persona card. In either case, you can manage some surprising mix-ups with this character.

Obviously, Minazuki is the better of the two due to his persona, which has many ways of controlling the arena. It also has access to command grabs and some really strong weapon normals, where dual wielding simply makes things work like with no other character.

Chie Satonaka

  • Weapon: Greaves

Chie may not be very good in long range or midrange, but she absolutely crushes it in the close range combat.

One thing that makes her really special is the invincibility frames, taking place during her standing-C, crouching-C, and jumping-C moves. This means that in combination with her extreme mobility and speed, hitting her would be almost impossible unless you manage to somehow get faster.

B-Tier Characters

Labrys

  • Weapon: Double-ended Axe

The massive axe in the hands of Labrys can produce a ton of damage, when its gauge turns red. In this case, players will also gain access to a whole new set of moves.

Unfortunately, holding that gauge can be problematic, since it diminishes as soon as you stop attacking. This means that if you want to keep the momentum going, you need to constantly engage in attacking, which may not be the best thing to do, when you need to defend yourself.

Naoto Shirogane

  • Weapon: Handgun

Naoto has quite a unique set of tricks, such as traps, which can be set up on the arena, and being invisible to enemies, they can serve as an excellent defense mechanism.

Another cool feature of Naoto is the insta-kill modes: Hamaon and Mudoon. If those are activated during the fight, you get to immediately win the match. But getting there can be hard, since the Fate gauge needs to be completely empty for that to happen.

Yosuke Hanamura

  • Weapon: Knives, Kunai

In previous Persona fighters, Yosuke was one of the top-tier characters due to his extreme mobility. But he was nerfed in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, which now makes him only a B-tier character.

But Yosuke still can parry like no other character, and his throwing knives inflict poison. His best move is his awakening super Sukukaja, which allows him to dash cancel most of his attacks and move even faster than before.
