Cultic Games’ Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones reached its initial Kickstarter goal, just two days before funding ends this Friday, July 1st.
Stygian is a computer RPG set in H.P. Lovecraft’s supernatural, horror fiction worlds. The game, which is set to finish sometime in November of 2017, features classic RPG elements and turn based tactical combat, but further utilizes unique gameplay mechanics like mental stability of chosen characters and belief systems.
Players will choose from eight different character archetypes, that take inspiration from 1920’s personas, or Lovecraft’s characters, to control, each with unique prologues, and distinct skill leveling options. For example, the Investigator archetype is capable of achieving max levels in Investigation, Firearms, and Psychology skills, whereas the Aristocrat can max out the Science, Speechcraft, and Occult skills.
Furthermore, each archetype posses unique abilities. The Performer archetype can boost the morale of their companions, whereas the Criminal gains more money through stealing. Additionally, different archetypes have unique dialogue options with NPCs of the same background.
Stygian is going to be a unique RPG, and this is further evident through its unique gameplay mechanics such as its Belief System and Character Mentality.
These 6 different belief systems will influence how well a player’s character comprehends challenges to their sanity, and also how their character stabilizes mentally. By choosing to believe in the Divine, characters could regain sanity by converting an NPC to have faith in God. If a player is Rational, researching creatures and their world will help them to comprehend their situation.
Or, players can choose to let their mental inhibitions out, which yields unique dialogue options and circumstances.
Only stretch goals remain for the funding of Stygian. These goals include:
- The Dreamlands at 75,000 lira: More narrative content and mechanics achieved while characters rest
- Town of Dunwich at 90,000 lira: New area with unique quest-line, items, and characters
- Spellcrafting at 102,000 lira: Mechanic that allows players to craft and balance their own spells
The campaign has raised over $70,000 so far.
