Heroes of Newerth players may want to change their passwords. S2’s DotA-style ARTS game’s security was breached yesterday, and the developer recommends that all players change their passwords to other sites as soon as possible.
S2 shut down the servers shortly after becoming aware of the breach. The login screen displayed the following announcement for players:
“At 2:30 PM EST we became aware that a Heroes of Newerth password security breach had occurred. We encourage everyone to change any passwords that were shared with your Heroes of Newerth account. Do not change your Heroes of Newerth account password at this time.”
The servers have come back up since, but players are still strongly recommended to change any passwords similar or identical to that of their HoN account.
Someone claiming to be the hacker behind the security breach posted on Reddit, but has not mentioned what he has done with the account information nor how he wriggled his way into S2’s servers. Heroes of Newerth players should continue to be careful with their account information until S2 has confirmed that the coast is clear.
