Judging from the trailer, long time fans of the series will have a lot to look forward to in Dynasty Warriors 8. While the additional characters is definitely a plus, the additional gameplay mechanics are the real focus here.

DW8 will feature a counter system, dynamic weapon changing, and an Awakening ability that allows you use use your character’s True Awakening Musou. This all sounds exciting on its own, but the real new mechanic that I’m looking forward to lies in the weapon affinity system.

Each weapon will have an affinity that is either strong or weak against other the other two affinities. This sort of rock paper scissors foundation might be a little played out in other games — but it’s the first time this type of system will be implemented in Dynasty Warriors.

If every character has its own skill set.. Oh man. I have high hopes for this one.

Dynasty Warriors 8 for the PlayStation 3 will be released in Japan on February 28. We can probably expect to see it in North America later in 2013 or early 2014.
