The Legend of Zelda’s Link is no stranger to seeing doppelgängers. From the introduction of Dark Link in The Ocarina of Time for the N64 onwards, the boy in the green tunic has seen his face pop up in everything from a console-selling appearance in Soul Calibur II to a recurring role in Super Smash Bros – often at about the same time as the release of a new Zelda

It comes as no surprise that while fans are still trying to figure out exactly what kind of preorder they’re getting with the release of the upcoming A Link Between Worlds, Nintendo is already hauling out familiar faces for the upcoming Wii U and 3DS releases of Super Smash Bros.

Pretty blue-haired Marth is making an appearance again in the fun-filled Nintendo fighting game, and recent screenshots have him going toe-to-toe against our favorite fairy boy.

If you look closely at the motion waves, each sword is different – and the difference is intentional. Series director Masahiro Sakurai shared the following on Miiverse (translated by ONM UK):

“Marth’s sword has a powerful tip! So we gave his sword slashes a sharp look with an emphasis on its edge.”

While the graphics have improved and Nintendo promises us some new faces, it looks like the newest iteration of the Super Smash Bros. franchise is taking on the game mechanics of the tried-and-true.

For Zelda fans, this might be a welcome taste of the familiar, since upcoming titles in the Legend of Zelda franchise will be facing some… changes. Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has announced that he is not a fan of hand-holding in games, and new Zelda titles are going to prove it

While A Link Between Worlds will be hitting shelves on November 22 for the 3DS, it looks like it will still take awhile for Link to continue his adventures on the big screen – outside of the SSB arena. More info on the long-awaited The Legend of Zelda HD release for the Wii U have been teased for E3 2014 – more than half a year away.

Meanwhile, fans can look forward to seeing Marth, Link, and newcomers like Mega Man and the Wii Fit Trainer sometime soon in 2014.
