Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Change Party Members

Learn how to change your party members in Baldur's Gate 3 to prepare for any battle!

In Baldur’s Gate 3, you might reach a point where you need to know how to change your party members to form the best team comp for an upcoming battle. It doesn’t take long for you to recruit more companions, adding more than you can take with you at one time. This is even more true if you gain more during co-op since you can’t kill them off. As such, you’ll have to begin making decisions and strategizing your party members to suit each situation.

To change party members in Baldur’s Gate 3, either send one companion to camp when recruiting new companions, or go to camp to change your party composition at any other time.

  • You can have no more than 3 companions with you at any one time.
  • You can switch party members when recruiting a new companion.
  • You can swap allies at camp at any other time — but not outside of camp.

How to Change Party Members When They’re Recruited in BG3

To switch party members when you recruit a new companion, you’ll get a dialogue prompt that lets you send somebody to camp to make room for the new member. However, this might not be convenient timing, so you might end up sending the new recruit to camp instead and dealing with the decisions later.

Once you’ve recruited your companions, your only option for making changes to your team roster is by first going to camp. You don’t have to wait until you need a long rest to return, but I find it more convenient to handle changing party members while I’m at camp for a long rest just to avoid extra loading screens.

Decide on the party member you want to remove and speak with them. You’ll have a dialogue option telling them to stay at camp for now. This gives you an open slot. Next, speak with the party member you want to add and select the dialogue option to invite them along on your next adventure.

While that’s how to change your party members in Baldur’s Gate 3, not everything in the game is as straightforward. That’s why you should consider visiting our BG3 guide hub and checking out more topics like how to save Shadowheart and how to use Mage Hand.
