Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has a release date for next year. While it’s only the second part of a trilogy retelling one of the most famous games ever made, we know a lot more now than we did yesterday. We got to see expanded locations, new and returning story beats, grand combat, open-world exploration, and much more. It’s unclear exactly where the story is going, but the world doesn’t have to wait too much longer to find out.
Final Fantasy 7 Release Date, Gameplay, and Story Details
During the latest PlayStation Showcase, we saw a new trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, announcing a Feburary 29, 2024 release. There’s a lot to unpack, and between the trailer, the official Final Fantasy 7 X (formerly Twitter) account, and the PlayStation blog on FF7 Rebirth, we can extrapolate some choice bits.
First and foremost, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is open world and officially has at least 100 hours of gameplay. The game’s side content might be double the size of the main story content, and the combat system is massively expanded. Synergy attacks make their return from the Intergrade DLC for Remake but massively expanded, involving members of the whole party.
Developers also revealed that all the mini-games from the original game — as well as a bevy of new ones — will make an appearance, as will riding and racing chocobos. It doesn’t seem like breeding chocobos is coming back, at least not in Rebirth. We also know that almost all of the world, up to and including the Forgotten Captial far in the north, is available to explore, and there are new and returning stories at the many locales we can get to.
The story of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is confirmed to not follow the exact format as the original, though that’s expected given how much changed in Remake. The order of visited locations is different, and some locations, specifically Wutai, aren’t present at all. Every character from the original game will make their return as well, including previously optional characters Vincent and Yuffie.
There’s a ton more information out there, including from Square Enix themselves, and surely far more to explore when Final Fantasy VII Rebirth releases early next year.
