Besides weapons and killstreaks, maps have always been the beating heart for Call of Duty. If a game doesn’t have good maps, it doesn’t matter how strong the guns are, nor how effective the streaks.
Without a strong map pool, the entire game suffers. Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer is coming in hot with 20 maps across three modes, with the lion’s share of them originating from the iconic Modern Warfare 2 (2009). However, these classic levels aren’t the only play areas we’ll be killing in. As announced at CoD NEXT, there’s much more coming out way over the course of MW3‘s first year in the sun.
MW3 Will Get Plenty More 6v6 Maps in Its First Year
Despite the 16 6v6 traditional CoD multiplayer maps coming at launch, Modern Warfare 3‘s seasons will introduce 12 new maps over the course of its supported year. There will be three maps per season, which seems to suggest there will be four seasons total in MW3, as well as Ground War and War mode maps.
It’s not clear how many, if any, of the DLC maps from Modern Warfare 2 (2009) will make their return. The developers did hint that some other old favorites might make their way to MW3. Personally, I’m hoping they bring back Trailer Park, Bailout, and Salvage. Just not Fuel. Anything but Fuel.
I have more reservations about the brand-new 6v6 maps that might be introduced. Most of the MW2 DLC maps were only average at best, and more recent maps from the Modern Warfare reboot series have been sub-par in almost all cases. Of the three developers, I’ve enjoyed Sledgehammer’s map design philosophy the most from all the way back to Advanced Warfare.
All that is a long way to say that Modern Warfare 3 will probably have one of the largest and most varied map pools in the series’ history, with a majority of them hopefully being of incredibly high quality. I hope that the modernizations made to the classic maps don’t ruin the original gameplay feel, but we’ll just have to wait to find out. Stay tuned for more as we near release on November 10.
