Seriously, who doesn’t love Minecraft? Okay, it isn’t my favorite, but I can respect the accomplishment.
Developer Mojang has announced that after topping the PSN digital sales chart in December, Minecraft has surpassed 1 million sold on the PS3 platform. As Mojang’s Daniel Kaplan said on the company’s official website:
“That has to be some kind of record on PSN, no?”
Minecraft even managed to outsell sales juggernauts Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty: Ghosts on the PSN in December, which proves that the engaging, innovative, even addictive “building” game appeals to a whole lot of people. The studio will bring Minecraft to the PS4 and Vita at some point in the future, but we don’t yet have exact launch dates. I have difficulty thinking the game will be enticing on the Vita, but who knows? Could offer great on-the-go entertainment.
As for whether or not Minecraft actually broke initial sales records on the PSN, I’m not sure about that. I think a few classics may have sold even better right out of the gate.
See? Nothing blowing up
The industry has taken a lot of flak for producing such violent games, but Minecraft is all about the cerebral allure. In fact, that’s a big part of many games that rely upon mental activity as opposed to dexterity and reflexes. Unfortunately, none of those titles end up in the mainstream press. According to the uninitiated, all gamers just run around shooting things in virtual worlds. …how frustrating a stereotype is that?
