Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games and its Grand Theft Auto series, has just given us a press release confirming what many thought true. According to official data, Grand Theft Auto 5 is the best-selling video game of 2013. According to the document published on Take Two’s website,
“Grand Theft Auto V finished as the best-selling video game of 2013.* To date, Grand Theft Auto V has sold-in more than 32.5 million units.”
Take-Two also says it will “increase its financial outlook for 2014” due, in part, to the outstanding performance of games like GTA 5 and NBA 2K14:
“Take-Two is increasing its financial outlook for fiscal year 2014 primarily to reflect its strong fiscal third quarter results and lower share count due to its repurchase of 16.24 million shares in November, 2013.”
While this is not surprising news since GTA 5 had so much hype and a ton of acclaim after launch, it is still interesting to see the sales numbers. It will also be interesting to see if these numbers encourage the higher-ups to invest in a PC release.
Many PC gamers are eagerly waiting for the game to arrive, and there is no doubt that those in charge see these numbers and will likely find ways to increase them even further.
