The v45 update to everyone’s favorite trash collector simulator brought two new enemies and a chunk of changes, including new balancing and some surprises. I’ll be talking about what the Tragedy Mask is in Lethal Company in this guide, because you’ll want to know.
What the Tragedy Mask and Comedy Masks Do in Lethal Company
There were actually two masks added with this update, though they function nearly identically. Your crew can find both Tragedy Masks and Comedy Masks while scrounging for scrap. I personally have mostly seen them on Rend, Dine, and Titan; though they can spawn as scrap on any moon.
The Comedy and Tragedy Masks appear to be simple scrap, with their value ranging in about the 30 to 40 credits range in most cases. You can pick them up and carry them around just like regular scrap, but watch out. These particular items have a secret.
One of the new enemies added with the v45 patch was the Masked. This monster looks like a regular crewmate, except it has a grotesquely cheery mask on its face. Masked can spawn outright on Rend, Dine, and Titan, without the use of a mask. I’ve got a whole guide on this enemy type if you need help dealing with it. The Tragedy and Comedy Masks can turn you into Masked enemies.
What’s the Difference Between a Tragedy Mask and a Comedy Mask?
There really isn’t a difference between the two other than what they look like. As a matter of fact, once a Tragedy Mask attaches to a player, it turns into a Comedy Mask. It goes from a crying face to a laughing face in no time flat.
How Do Masks Possess You in Lethal Company?
These are particularly tricky items, because merely having one in your inventory can be a problem. It’s possible for these unique items to possess you and turn you into a Masked yourself, under a few circumstances.
- Holding a mask in your main hand for a prolonged period can eventually cause the mask to attach to your face on its own.
- There’s a chance a Tragedy Mask or Comedy Mask will attach to you if you hold it up to your face.
- If you die with a mask in your inventory, it will immediately possess you.
The only solution to dealing with a Masked possession is to teleport the affected player within the first few seconds of a mask attaching to their face. Once the possession is complete, there’s no saving them.
And now you know what the Tragedy Mask does in Lethal Company. It can be sold, certainly, but it’s up to you and your crew to determine whether it’s worth keeping on the ship. Some players just can’t be trusted to not mess with these.
