I love Uncharted.
Without any shadow of a doubt, I believe it was the best franchise of the previous generation. I mean, in my mind, it’s not even close. Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V run second but after three amazing Uncharted entries, all of which set new quality bars and pushed the PS3 hardware even farther, the nod goes to Naughty Dog.
And yet, as much as I can’t wait for Uncharted 4, a killer new PS4 exclusive IP would interest me more.
Here’s the thing: People forget that new IPs help launch new generations. They help foster and cultivate interest in a new era of gaming. They provide consumers with a new perspective: “Here’s something you’ve never seen before to prove the power of these great new machines.”
Hey, the best new IP of last generation…?
Yep, I think it was Uncharted. Other franchises that began their runs during the last generation: Assassin’s Creed, LittleBigPlanet, Gears of War, etc. Not only are these some of the most popular names in gaming today, they’re also some of the most respected and acclaimed. They’ve helped the industry in more ways than one, and not simply because they were good. They were new.
Uncharted 4 will be incredible. I’m pretty sure of that. At the same time, seeing a brand new IP that puts the power of the PlayStation 4 on prominent display would impress me even more. For instance, remember when Quantic Dream presented that tech demo for The Dark Sorcerer last year? It became one of the most talked-about presentations of the year, and it’s currently one of the most anticipated projects of the new generation.
Why? Because people really do crave fresh and new. Well, every once in a while, anyway, and especially at the start of a new generation.
Sony is known for their first-party exclusives, so let’s see some new ones!
Killzone, God of War, Gran Turismo, Wipeout, Ratchet & Clank, in addition to the previously mentioned Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet franchises, alongside Heavy Rain, Journey, Demon’s Souls, The Last Of Us, etc. The list just goes on and on. This is what Sony does. However, if you think about it, we’ve really only seen one new AAA PS4 exclusive revealed thus far: The Order: 1886. There are more coming, of course, but I’d like to see them soon, and I’d prefer to see them before I saw more of Uncharted 4.
Quantic Dream should step up, or we might finally see more of The Last Guardian. I’m pretty psyched about Guerrilla’s new project – an epic new RPG, it seems – despite my previous reservations, and I can’t wait to see what Sony London and Sony Japan bring to the table. Yeah, I want a new God of War and Gran Turismo eventually, too. That’s not what fuels growth, though.
I know I’m not the only one who wants to see these new IPs. I must reiterate my faith in Naughty Dog, but even so…give up the fresh and never-before-seen!
