There’s no denying that Minecraft still presents some of the best emergent gameplay experiences in all of gaming — even more than a decade after release. I’m constantly impressed with what the community has come up with, and prison servers are uniquely fun escape room experiences.

In short, prison servers are virtual communities where you complete various tasks to, well, break out of prison. While diving into the rabbit hole that is this game type head first will undoubtedly lead to a ton of fun, there are a lot of choices, so I’ve collected the 15 best MC prison servers you should start with first, whether you’re playing Java or Bedrock. Complex Gaming

The Complex Gaming prison server has the largest playerbase of any MC prison server, with thousands of like-minded players competing against each other every day. The best area on this server is Skull Island, which has some truly engaging PvP battles and excellent rewards, too! If the progression system seems a bit too slow for you, then there’s always an option to purchase special items at the server shop, but I just love jumping in myself and think there’s plenty to do without buying anything.

Vortex Network

This prison server offers a unique gameplay setting: it’s based in space amongst a plethora of awesome looking speceships, alien planets, and various cosmic entities. The developer strictly forbids other players from destroying your buildings, so once you erect anything in Vortex Network, it will last forever! It’s one of the best benefits of playing on this prison server and one I think should be adopted on every server. There are also other specific rules that ensure a safe and friendly environment for all, so it’s a great place to start.

Netherite

The Netherite prison server focuses specifically on player alliances, where you can join other users for a collaborative and interactive gameplay experience. Here, you can form alliances and even join different gangs, opening up fun social and role-playing experiences. Although the map size may be a bit too small, the strict rules prohibit others from stealing your things or using teleports to cheat. It’s another great starting point.

InsanityCraft

InsanityCraft was built from scratch using custom-made server software, so expect lots of customization options and plugin support that I don’t often see on other servers. This prison server fits those of us who want to gain free ranks quickly with actual cash prizes and regular events. The gameplay may seem a bit grindy at first, but once you reach a certain threshold, the fun never stops.

BlossomCraft

Many Minecraft prison servers can be intense with a capital “I.” Whether you’re just jumping in or a veteran of the Minecraft subculture, you may be looking for something a little more relaxing and fun. Blossomcraft is just that. In my experience, it has the friendliest community that doesn’t take competition too seriously. So try it out and rank up in the most chill way possible without any pressure.

Blaze Gaming

Blaze Gaming offers classic prison gameplay where you need to progress through the ranks by gathering resources and completing tasks. My favorite element of this server is the ability to create custom enchantments and upgrades, which makes the experience so much more enjoyable. But I must also warn you that the economy system is quite harsh.

Advancius Network

Advancius has some of the most active social media presence amongst all other Minecraft prison servers. Besides an official Discord server and forums, you can engage with other players on various social media websites, including YouTube and TikTok. This allows you to create lots and lots of opportunities while interacting with other players from this server online, from improving your gameplay to partying up for really unique experiences.

LifeBoat

LifeBoat lets you team up with other players and create your own prison factions. This can help you speed up the process of PvP mining and gathering resources. One of the best features is that you can share loot with others without breaking the rules. Of course, you’ll need to converse and interact with other players, so keep that in mind if you’re more the solo type. Luckily, there’s a friendly Discord server for to help facilitate things, and I’ve always found everyone to be welcoming and helpful.

ManaCube

ManaCube will fit those of us looking for something truly unique and unusual when it comes to prison servers. Here, you start as a “slave” and progress to a “god” using mana, cubits, and rebirth mechanics. It’s a more fantastical take on the subgenre, and I find it a refreshing one to delve into every now and again. Note that this server requires you to download a special ManaCube resource pack for proper display of various items and areas, but that’s not too big a deal if you’re looking for something a little different.

OPLegends

OPLegends is a popular prison server that has some of the most unique mines in Minecraft. The design of the mines and the challenges included are totally unique. I also really like that this server has its own auction, which allows player-to-player trading. While most servers want to fully control trading and the economy, this one gives a bit more freedom in that regard.

OPBlocks

This fun Minecraft prison server had some ups and downs in recent months, but it’s back online, and you can go back to purchasing plots and taking on various challenges. The best part of this server and why it got so popular in the first place is its massive PvP arena, which involves a huge community of players. The combat is still extremely fun, so be sure to join if you’re interested.

InPvP MineVille

As you may suspect from the name itself, InPvP is specifically focused on PvP prison combat, where players form gangs and fight in designated warzones. This server has a dedicated MineVille shop, which allows you to spend Minecoins and purchase various items, including enchantments, bombs, pets, ranks, and even roleplay classes.

LemonCloud

LemonCloud is another prison server that experienced a complete overhaul and currently involves retextured tools and armor pieces that match the rank’s title. The mods have also rebalanced enchantments and perks to make the gameplay more fair for players of different ranks. Additionally, LemonCloud offers lotteries, crates, and auto-drop parties.

EYServer

EYServer is owned and curated by the popular YouTuber named EYStreem, who has over seven million subscribers. This prison server consistently provides a platform for hundreds of players on a daily basis. Although there’s a lot of drama involved in how EYStreem manages the bans on the server, it’s always a fun experience.

SootMC

Although SootMC is the smallest prison server on my list, there’s one specific feature that I appreciate so much about it — and that’s access to mini-games. If you get tired of constantly pushing the ranks in prison mode, you’re always welcome to switch to some fun mini-games that will surely help you relax.
