Rex
The iconic Tyrannosaurus Rex is the carnivore to have. They’re beefy, have high attack damage, and no other carnos will aggro them. Trying to walk one through a forest may take a while, but you won’t have to worry about dying to just about anything. If other dinos do try to attack, the Rex’s Roar will dissuade them.
When it comes to boss fights, you definitely want to have a couple of Rexes for your tribe. They may be hard to find and tame, but it’s worth the effort.
Triceratops
If you ever thought you wanted to ride a Triceratops while watching The Land Before Time, now’s your chance. The three-horned dino is king when it comes to gathering Thatch, thanks to its charge attack.
Not only is it great at bringing home bundles of Thatch, but it also excels at collecting berries. And with its 50% frontal damage reduction, you can feel safe letting it roam a small area around your base in the beginning stages of the game.
Ankylosaurus
The Ankylosaurus is the best walking tank, making it useful to take into caves due to its shorter height. Not only is it completely spiked with an AoE tail attack, but it’s one of the best metal gatherers, too. Its ability to reduce the carry weight of metal by 85% makes it ideal to farm metal, obsidian, and crystal, though it’ll also grab flint. Just bring it to an area with multiple metal nodes and you’ll be good to go.
Yutyrannus
This Rex-like relative is found in the snowy regions of the Island. While a Rex is good at scaring away enemies, this fluffy dino can do that while also buffing your tribe. Courage Roar increases your damage while reducing incoming damage. Its Fear Roar reduces enemy damage while increasing what it takes by 50%.
Doedicurus
You definitely want to tame a couple Doedicurus for your tribe, especially if you plan on building a lot of structures. This little guy may seem like a boulder with a tail, which makes it perfect for harvesting stone. It’s the best at gathering it with a weight reduction of 75%, allowing it to carry loads more back to base.
Brontosaurus
Ah, the Long Neck! For any of us Millenials, Little Foot is the iconic baby dinosaur. Thankfully, in ASA, the Brontosaurus is a useful dino when it comes to moving your base. Thanks to the platform saddle, you can load it up and bring all your tribe’s possessions with you when you relocate. It may take a while due to its slow walking pace, but the perk is that everything will reach your endpoint. If you want to be really creative, you can even build your base on the back of one.
Therizinosaur
Therizinosaur may look like the predecessor of the chicken, but it’s far more aggressive. While it’s a herbivore, it’s territorial and will attack you as you draw near. However, it’s the best when it comes to harvesting Chitin, Organic Polymer, Wood, Keratin and Fiber. This makes it a necessary tame.
Carcharodontosaurus
Carcharodontosaurus has multiple passive abilities that make it an ideal combat addition for your tribe. Its Shredded ability reduces healing the target can receive while Killing Frenzy makes it immune to stuns for 10 seconds after killing something. Along with Bloodrage, which increases its heal rate and damage, this is one dino you don’t want to mess with, making it perfect for taking on bosses.
Spino
Spino is one of my favorite dinos to tame and one I’m probably the most scared of due to its ability to attack on land and in water. It can quickly cross both terrains and has some bulk to withstand other carnivores. You can even use its water buff to help take down a Giga if you encounter one near a river or ocean. If your base is near water that you constantly need to cross, the Spino is a helpful addition to your tamed creatures.
Giganotosaurus
Finally, we have the Giga, arguably the most fearsome carnivore you can tame. It has the ability to get through natural armor, and can double its melee damage while in Rage mode. The Bite attack causes the Gnashed effect, which lowers the movement speed and health of the afflicted. It’s extremely dangerous to try and tame, with encounters normally leading to death. This makes it the perfect addition to your boss battle crew.
