E3 2014: No Split-Screen Co-op in Destiny?

There will be no split-screen co-op in Destiny, Bungie confirms
This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

For me, one of the best parts of playing Halo and Borderlands was split-screen co-op. I loved playing with friends and family as there is something that playing with each other on the couch that online cannot match. It seems, however, that I won’t be playing split-screen co-op with friends and family in Destiny, as Bungie just announced that the game will not support split-screen.

No co-op for you

Destiny is not supporting split-screen because they dislike the feature. Far from it. They are not supporting it because doesn’t fit in the developer’s ambitions for the title. Bungie community manager Eric Osborne had this to say:

“We’re actually not supporting split-screen in Destiny. We love split-screen. Obviously we have a legacy of supporting it. We know a lot of players love it. We love it. But we really wanted to untether guardians. Even if you’re in a fireteam, you can go wherever you want. That level of freedom was really important for us. We know some players really like split-screen. Ultimately, you can’t build a game to suit every single player out there.”

They are still listening

Though there will be no split-screen in Destiny, Osborne assures that Bungie is always listening to player feedback.

“The good news for us is with a new IP you get an opportunity to set a foundation in place. You get to see what players do; see what the community loves about it. You get to be reactive. And the reality is we have no idea what people are going to do, what they’re going to fall in love with in this world.”

Still excited

While I would have liked split-screen in Destiny (as I mentioned before, it was one of my favorite parts of Halo, Gears of War, and Borderlands), I understand that it might be a little difficult to include the feature in a MMO. Regardless, Destiny is one of the most anticipated games of the year for me. I can’t wait to jump into the beta and get a taste of Destiny. It might be one of the best times of this summer.

Destiny releases on September 9 on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. Bungie will be holding an alpha testing for the game this weekend, starting on Thursday. You can sign up at www.GreatnessAwaits.com/Destiny. The game will see an open beta starting July 17, first on the PS3 and PS4. It will come to the Xbox One and 360 at a later time.
