EA announced today that they will no longer be supporting “The Sims 2” in its original format — according to the Origin FAQ:
Going forward, EA will no longer be providing any new content or making any additional technical updates to The Sims 2.
With the Sims 4 set for release on September 2nd, EA will be cleaning up their Origin servers to make room for the new Sims title.Yet, not all hope is lost for those avid Sims 2 players still plucking away at some sort of simulated dollhouse nirvana. For anyone who has purchased The Sims 2 on Origin in its digital format, EA will be giving those owners free copies of The Sims 2 Ultimate Edition; a rather bloated package which contains all of The Sims 2 expansions, eight in all, as well as the “stuff packs”.
Tech Support will still be available for The Sims 2 Ultimate Edition, but don’t expect anymore content to be rolled out for the decade old game. All in all, a free game is nice, especially when it incorporates a massive amount of content, but it still seems like an odd move for EA to be handing out free software with a flagship launch around the corner. So channel your inner gamer from 2004, sit back, and enjoy all that The Sims 2 Ultimate Edition has to offer, as long as you already bought The Sims 2 at some point on Origin, of course.
