The Order: 1886 May Have a Legitimate Shot at Game of the Year

Everyone loves to bash The Order: 1886 but the bottom line is that it could end up being one of the best games of the new generation.
This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Ever since we first saw gameplay for The Order: 1886, we’ve seen nothing but haters posting ridiculous headlines.

Why? The answer should be obvious: As one of the very first games announced for a brand new generation, expectations were understandably through the roof. We should all admit that no matter what Sony or Microsoft showed off early last year, many of us would’ve been unimpressed.

After a very long generation that led to widespread disinterest and fatigue, everyone was champing at the bit for a new era. The result: Nobody satisfied with anything, from Titanfall to inFamous: Second Son. Now, don’t get me wrong; I don’t believe we’ve seen a true example of “next-gen,” either (according to my own personal definition).

But I ardently believe we’ll see it in The Order: 1886.

It’s ironic that everyone bashes the game for looking “generic” when in fact, “generic” is what everyone seems to want

The best-selling video games year after year? Gee, I think they’re franchises with names like Call of DutyAssassin’s Creed, and Madden. The most innovative, unique titles hardly crack the sales charts, so it seems to me that gamers are a bunch of hypocrites. Either that, or the core gaming group is a lot smaller than everyone seems to think, and the mainstream casual masses dictate the sales charts. Yes, I think I’ll go with the latter explanation.

The Order: 1886 is a third-person shooter. So? Last I checked, Uncharted has always been a third-person shooter, too, and I don’t see anyone slamming the franchise for this trait. When we finally see gameplay of A Thief’s End, will it be labeled “generic?” Not a chance in hell. What separates Uncharted from The Order? A better story? From what we’ve heard, Ready at Dawn is attempting to pen an extremely compelling. in-depth story. Linearity? Hardly; both are linear adventures.

I’d very much like an explanation from the haters as to why one third-person shooter gets called “generic” while the other is revered above all others.

We still need to see a LOT more of The Order before we start passing judgment

I do believe The Order: 1886 will be a fantastic game when it arrives. Sony simply doesn’t allow mediocre first-party titles out the door. This isn’t about fancy graphics; this is about a fantastic concept, an excellent – and even unique – setting, what could be extremely intriguing characters, and a style of gameplay that is tight, polished, and even diverse. I guess everyone ignored gameplay details that involve systems beyond third-person shooting, but they do exist.

That being said, we’ve seen just a few minutes of gameplay and nothing more. This is a perfect example of gamers refusing to read because they base their entire opinion on a visual, and not text. The gameplay, story, setting, and character details are extremely promising; don’t forget that the general feeling surrounding The Order before the gameplay footage was very positive. Then, a few minutes later, everyone reverses, and after having seen precious little of what that game will ultimately offer.

I guarantee that if Ready at Dawn comes through, this will be one of the best games of 2015.
