Can You Turn Off Auto Battle in Unicorn Overlord?

Unicorn Overlord is a tactics based game, but the tactics aren't played out during battle.

Tactical RPG Unicorn Overlord features strategic map movements, set battle orders, and various skills. However, battles are auto-completed, preventing you from making mid-fight decisions. If you don’t like this feature, our article will help you understand whether you can turn off Auto Battle in Unicorn Overlord.

Looking into the settings to see if Auto Battle could be changed, I was disappointed to find that there is no way to turn this feature off.

Unicorn Overlord is an anime-styled tactics RPG that resembles Final Fantasy Tactics. Because of its similarity, I assumed it would utilize turn-based tactics instead of other mechanics. Additionally, the official descriptions on the Atlus website don’t specify what type of tactical play you can expect. These factors were compounded until I was certain that the game would feature turn-based decision-making.

While playing, I quickly learned I was wrong. Instead, Unicorn Overlord uses RTS mechanics, with battles running only automatically.

This doesn’t mean there are no tactics to be had. Although it’s not turn-based, you can still dictate how combat will play out. Prior to entering battle, you have a chance to move your characters around the board, use items, and set different triggers for skills.

When you enter Unit Details, you’ll see the different loadouts currently in effect, check the characters current skills, and equip new items. Under the Tactics section of the Loadout screen, you can change what the person does during a fight and set up when you want them to use abilities, such as a healing spell.

Once in battle, this loadout will go into effect. The character will auto-attack with the preset Tactics, avoiding any skills that haven’t been triggered. Combining this with unit placement is how you execute various strategies.

Even though you can’t turn off auto-battling, there are still tactical decisions to make in Unicorn Overlord. For more on the game, check out our Unicorn Overlord guide hub for help.
