Modding is a staple of the Stardew Valley community, allowing you to customize your farm, marry more than one person, or catch fish easier. With custom creations being a large part of the game, will Stardew Valley mods work with Update 1.6? Here’s what we know.
Stardew Valley 1.6 Modpocalypse — Will Mods Break?
Unlike previous updates, Update 1.6 is rewriting essential pieces of the game’s code which may cause mods to break once in effect. This can seem counterintuitive to the end goal of making modding easier, but after a transition period, the process of creating mods and implementing them will be much simpler.
The Stardew Valley Wiki is tracking all mods that are compatible with the update. Pathoschild has been working tirelessly to ensure that as many mods as possible are available to players. According to Nexus Mods, 44% of C# mods on SMAPI will be functioning after 1.6 goes live. I know I’ll be upset if I can’t catch any axolotls in my game after the update!
However, whether a mod or content pack breaks really depends on the creator. If they don’t update the content framework then it simply won’t work in Stardew Valley 1.6. Reaching out to the author, checking their social media pages, as well as the mod page can give you more information for specific mods. FlashShifter has already confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that Stardew Valley Expanded will be updated the day 1.6 releases, so you don’t have to worry about your game getting wrecked.
How to Backup Your Modded Stardew Valley Save File
To be on the safe side, before you update Stardew Valley to 1.6, you want to make a copy of your modded save file. This ensures your game won’t get corrupted due to any errors or bugs that may occur while everything gets on the same page. To copy your save data on PC, follow these instructions:
- Open the Stardew Valley local file location
- In Steam, right-click on the game title then navigate to Manage and select Browse Local Files
- Choose the Saves folder
- Right-click and Copy the folder or specific save
- Paste the Copy to another area of your PC, cloud storage, or external storage
This will allow you to have a version of your game fully intact with all mods working.
While some Stardew Valley mods may break due to Update 1.6, a large amount of them, including some of the most popular, will remain functional. Check out more of our game coverage, including guides and features, in our Stardew Valley hub.
