Digital distribution service Good Old Games has signed a deal with Disney to bring LucasArts games to its platform for the first time. This agreement will see over 30 of the publisher’s cult classic games released DRM-free on GOG.com.

As a platform dedicated to PC classics, the lack of LucasArts titles was a big gap in Goold Old Games’ lineup;  a gap which has now been filled. At the moment, only six of the games are available. These include Indiana Jone and the Fate of Atlantis, Sam & Max Hit The Road, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and the Bioware RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

By far the biggest news is the inclusion of X-Wing and TIE-Fighter, which are available digitally for the first time. Not only are they two of the best Star Wars games, they’re also two of the best space simulators ever made. Developed by Totally Games, X-Wing and its sequel TIE-Fighter came out in 1993 and 1994  respectively. If you buy the games through GOG.com you’ll not only recieve the originals but also the 1998 CD special editions. Both titles have also been updated to work with modern control schemes. When they first came out, you could only play X-Wing or TIE-Fighter with a joystick. The GOG.com versions work with numerous PC compatible devices including an Xbox 360 controller.

This news has been recieved very enthusiastically by Star Wars fans and retro gamers alike. Geoff Engelsteign tweeted ”OMG! GOG.com is re-releasing the classics X-Wing and Tie Fighter tomorrow! So much for all that work I need to get done…”.  UndeaDan Batrooks was equally excited, writing ”X-Wing and TIE Fighter return! This is the best birthday ever.” Personally, I’m hoping that Good Old Games will also release the third game in the series, X-Wing Vs. TIE-Fighter , along with its expansion pack, Balance of Power.
