One of your core decisions when building a Warlock is Eldritch Invocations, which shape your build. You get them at Levels 2, 5, 7, 9, and 12, and I found that some are far superior to others. Here are my top 10 best Warlock Eldritch Invocations in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Top 10 Best Eldritch Invocations in BG3
Agonizing Blast
If you’re going full Warlock or mostly Warlock, this is universally the most powerful Eldritch Invocation. You get your Charisma bonus as damage on Eldritch Blasts, and this stacks on every blast once you reach Level 5 for two blasts and Level 10 for three. By Level 10, you’re getting +15 damage with 20 Charisma, assuming all of them hit. This is exceptional on caster Warlocks, but it also works great on melee Pact of the Blade Warlocks, which is your best ranged option.
One With Shadows
One With Shadows gives you a free casting of an incredibly powerful version of Invisibility that lasts until you use Long Rest and doesn’t require concentration. You can set up incredible surprise round ambushes with this spell, especially if you’re multiclassing into Rogue or have a Ranger in your party for Pass Without Trace. I also discovered that using your Ilithid Powers to fly doesn’t break invisibility, whereas the regular Fly spell does.
Devil’s Sight
Devil’s Sight is the third on our list with a big asterisk. This invocation is only powerful if you’re combining it with a steady casting of Darkness through scrolls or racial abilities like from Drow. Essentially, your enemies will receive all the debuffs of Darkness like being Blinded and having Disadvantage on attack rolls while you’re unaffected and have Advantage on them. This is because you can see in this magical Darkness and are essentially protected by it. Otherwise, this Invocation is of a lower tier.
Armour of Shadows
Armour of Shadows is an incredible spell early game to increase AC despite your Light Armor proficiency. This is because Light Armor options early game cannot reach AC 13 plus Dexterity that Mage Armor from AoS can. Moreover, you’re casting this for free without expending your much-needed Warlock spell slots. Once you pick up magical Light Armor that has AC 13, this invocation becomes redundant but it carried me through Act 1 and early Act 2.
Fiendish Vigor
Similarly to Armour of Shadows, Fiendish Vigor is a decent defensive option for Eldritch Invocation that gives you 7 temporary HP. I prefer it on melee Pact of the Blade Warlocks for two reasons. You’re much more likely to benefit from 7 temporary HP in melee and this invocation keeps being useful throughout the entire game, unlike Armor of Shadows.
Repelling Blast
Whereas Agonizing Blast is useful for both melee and ranged Warlocks, I take Repelling Blast only on ranged caster builds. That said, for those builds, it’s an incredible Invocation that will keep melee enemies running toward you forever. Especially if you can set up some movement-hampering effects like Grease Bottles or AOE difficult terrain spells like Plant Growth from Archfey. At Level 10, with all three EB hits, you’re pushing foes 45 feet away, which is incredible. Woe upon those who are near cliffs and edges, and good luck to them on their way down.
Sculptor of Flesh
This is the only extra spell Eldritch Invocation I recommend because the others are terrible. Unlike the D&D 5e version where you get a free casting per Long Rest, almost all extra spell Invocations in BG3 cost a spell slot. Sculptor of Flesh is the exception because summons are so powerful in BG3 since they don’t require concentration and they last for the entire day or until they die. An extra party member can be extremely powerful, even if you’re paying a spell slot for it.
Lifedrinker
If you’re going full Warlock and you’re a melee build, this is your ultimate ability and the best Eldritch Invocation for your specific build. It’s essentially Agonizing Blast but tailor-made for you, adding your Charisma bonus to your melee attacks as necrotic damage. It’s a must-have Invocation if you’re 12 levels into Pact of the Blade Warlock.
Beast Speech
Lastly, we have the two roleplay Invocations, which I really like. The first one, Beast Speech, allows you to cast Speak With Animals for free, and it lasts until your Long Rest. This opens up so many useful and entertaining dialogue options for animals. One example is that you’re going to have a much easier time with the Owlbear and the Owlbear Cub in Act 1. Opportunities to use it just grow from there.
Beguiling Influence
Lastly, if you cannot pick up Persuasion or Deception with your build, then Beguiling Influence can be worth it. This is because Persuasion is such a useful skill to have both for dialogue purposes and avoiding combat. Furthermore, Persuasion is always used in companion quest finales to convince companions of a different goal and usually get better endings for them relatively speaking. Beguiling Influence gives you all three social skills Persuasion, Deception, and Intimidation so it’s useful for filling the ones you lack from character creation.
