Warlocks have the least number of spell slots among full casters, so races that provide bonus spells are ideal for them. Furthermore, races that provide defensive bonuses, like armor proficiencies, also work great. Here are my top 5 best Warlock races in Baldur’s Gate 3.
What Are the Top 5 Best Warlock Races in Baldur’s Gate 3
Tiefling
Each Tiefling subrace provides bonus spells for you to use for free once per Long Rest. I highly recommend Asmodeus Tieflings for caster Warlocks. Hellish Rebuke weaponizes your Reaction, and Darkness works great with the Devil’s Sight Eldritch Invocation. As for the melee Pack of the Blade Warlocks, the Zariel Tiefling fits like a glove. Both smite spells you get synergize with your playstyle and Thaumaturgy is great for Intimidation which you’ll usually have proficiency in.
Githyanki
While Tieflings provide your Warlock with incredible offensive options and spell list expansions, Githyanki are defense and movement-oriented. First off, you’ll get medium armor proficiency for a drastic boost to your AC through magic armor sets. You don’t even have to use Mage Armor anymore. Second, you get Misty Step and Jump for free once per Long Rest which greatly aids your mobility. The additional Mage Hand spell is also useful in certain situations to explore or trigger traps.
Dwarf
Dwarves are similar to Githyanki since they also give you medium armor proficiencies, which is rare on a caster. That said, they also capitalize on defenses with some Poison Resistance and Advantage on saves against being Poisoned. Last but not least, if you’re aiming for Pact of the Blade on Level 3, you’ll get some extra weapon proficiencies for the first two levels.
Drow
Drow are another race that can expand your Warlock spell list, though in a more supportive and useful manner. The two bonus spells you get with Drow are Darkness, which is excellent with the Devil’s Sight Invocation, and Faerie Fire, which gives you and your team an Advantage on affected foes. Both of these spells are useful for any Warlock build, and you also get 120 feet of Darkvision and some defenses against Charm, which is common in Act 3.
Half-Elf Drow
Half-Elf Drow are just an alternative option to Drow that give you the same spells. That said, instead of the Drow racial bonuses, Half-Elves give you Shield proficiency. This is incredible for both melee and ranged Warlock builds since it drastically boosts your AC. The bonus even scales since you’ll be getting better magic shields later on.
