PS4 Outsells Xbox One in October, But That May Change

For the tenth month running the PS4 has taken top spot as the number one selling console in the US. Following a release of the NPD sales figures, the Sony Playstation Twitter account tweeted this following statement.

However, Sony’s days on top may be numbered, as some aggressive priced deduction on the Xbox One has caused sales to triple in the past two weeks. Sony may currently be leading the race, but recent news that the Xbox One had sold 10 million units (and that all Xbox One retail bundles will be receiving a $50 discount) may mean we’ll see sales figures shift in Microsoft’s favor during the busy holiday period.

The NPD also noted that sales of both the Xbox One and Playstation 4 are tracking well ahead of their last-gen counterparts after a year of sales.

“October 2014 marks the first 12 months of sales for the Xbox One and PS4; and after the first year, these consoles have had a great start as cumulative sales are currently over 70% higher than the combined first year totals of Xbox 360 and PS3,”

Sony and Microsoft weren’t the only names to make the headlines, as Nintendo also announced that Super Smash Bros. 3DS was the tenth 3DS game to surpass 1 million sales in the US. The last reported sales figures placed the 3DS brawler at over 3 million units sold.

Nintendo didn’t release any Wii U hardware sales, but stated that sales of the system and increased by 47 percent in the past year and software sales had increased by 84 percent.

Evidently, these current sales figures highlight that the gaming industry continues to grow as a dominant form of entertainment. Should the popularity of Microsoft’s system continue into November, then we will see the Xbox One outsell the PS4 for the first time.
