In the weeks prior to PAX East – as I mentally prepped for a weekend of nonstop gaming, copious amounts of energy supplements and little to no sleep – I began perusing through the App store in search of new time killers.
After much searching and more disappointment I stumbled upon a gem known Knights of Pen and Paper. If you are a fan of Dungeons and Dragons I highly recommend you download this app.
Knights of Pen and Paper brings the entire experience of a game of DnD to your phone/tablet. Everything from the table snacks, out of character banter, and actual DnD type game play. You build your team from such players as Grandma, who adds a boost to your threat, Little Brother, who adds a boost to initiative or the Pizza Guy, the cheap starter, and many more (some you can only unlock by completing quests). The game gives you access to such classes as Cleric, Paladin, Rogue, Mage, etc. Every class has a set of 4 abilities; passive, active, or a combination of both.
The entire game can by modified to fit your liking. Everything from the table your characters play on to the furniture in the room. Don’t get too hung up on decorating though, as the DM begins to weave you his tale the world you have created melts away and you are transported into a world of adventure. Save the princess, defend the castle, slay evil everywhere you go. Level up your characters/abilities, weapons/armor, and for that extra boost buy items for your characters to make them truly a force to be reckoned with.
One of the best parts about this wonderful little game; unlike most apps (or so it seems to me) that are as expansive as this you never need to spend any real money on in game purchase to advance. You can if you choose too, but the game is no less spectacular without it. I challenge everyone who reads this to find Knights of Pen and Paper and test it for yourself. I guarantee you’ll fall so deeply in love that you may scare yourself.
