Resource and ship management on an economic level is quite important in Homeworld 3 since the resources are limited per level. If you have ships you don’t need in a specific mission it’s much better to salvage them for new ones. Here’s how to recycle ships in Homeworld 3.
How to Retire Ships in Homeworld 3
You can recycle ships in Homeworld 3 to get resources back and build new ships like this:
- Select the ship or unit group you want to salvage.
- Hold Alt and right-click on the ship.
- In the menu hover over Orders.
- Select Retire.
Your ship will then move to the closest Mothership or Carrier. Once the ship reaches a salvage station you’ll lose the ship and get 80% of the resources back that you used to build the ship. This is an important strategy to use in the Campaign or multiplayer games where resources are limited.
I would highly recommend surveying the battlefield and seeing what ships you don’t actually need. Then, salvage them and create new ones. For example, in the Campaign, you don’t always need Minelayer Frigates, and sometimes a faster Strikecraft or Corvette force would be better. You can then salvage Minelayers for other units.
Sometimes, this option doesn’t appear in Tactical Pause mode, so if the Order menu isn’t showing, unpause the game. Furthermore, if you, by any chance, can’t recycle captured ships, note that that’s a bug, and it will get fixed in the next mission you run. Recycling ships is a great beginner and advanced strategy alike that can give you that extra bit of resources you need for an important upgrade or a fresh batch of units.
