How to Hatch Yoshi Eggs in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Once you reach Chapter 3, you finally get your own Yoshi — or, at least, you get a Yoshi Egg to start with, which you can hatch. If you know how to manipulate the system, you can even pick its color. Here’s how to hatch Yoshi Eggs in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Before you pick your color, you need to get the Yoshi Egg. When you’re doing Glitz Pit fights and either reach Rank 14 or win six fights, an NPC in the locker room tells you that the Hot Dog Stand is offering a special egg dish. Head to the Hot Dog Stand, and you find a Yoshi Egg bouncing around. Catch up to it and speak with it to get it to join you.

Yoshi’s Egg hangs out with you until you fight the Iron Adonis Twins, which is a scripted loss. No matter what you do, you won’t be able to win this battle. However, you can use the time spent facing them to affect which color Yoshi ends up being. Once the fight is over, you meet your Yoshi.

How to Choose Your Yoshi’s Color

There are seven possible colors that Yoshi can be: green, red, blue, orange, pink, black, and white. The color is decided based on how long it takes to hatch Yoshi. These colors rotate on a 20-minute cycle. After 20 minutes, the cycle resets and starts back at the beginning. Additionally, the time that counts toward the cycle is limited to the game running (paused or not) and time spent in battle. Putting your game on Sleep Mode doesn’t count toward the cycle.

Here’s the color cycle for Yoshi:

• 0-6 Minutes: Green
• 6-9 Minutes: Red
• 9-11 Minutes: Blue
• 11-15 Minutes: Orange
• 15-18 Minutes: Pink
• 18-19 Minutes: Black
• 19-20 Minutes: White
• 20 Minutes: Back to Green and start over
