Star Wars: Hunters is a new game for mobile phones and the Nintendo Switch, and it has players competing against one another in third-person combat. The game itself features a colorful cast of characters that beg the question of whether Hunters is canon to Star Wars or not.
Is Star Wars: Hunters Canon?
The diverse costume designs of Star Wars: Hunters‘ characters evoke a vibe that hyperbolizes the best aspects of Star Wars without concern about whether it impacts the larger canon. In reality, Star Wars: Hunters is firmly set in the Star Wars canon at a time that is still being explored in the movies and TV shows.
While it’s hard to pinpoint the exact year(s) the game is set, it’s confirmed that Star Wars: Hunters is established between Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens. This is why characters like Sentinel are able to operate as a remnant of the Empire without fans having to wonder if the First Order will make an appearance. It also serves as the perfect time for a story like this, as the galaxy is still reeling from the dismantling of the Empire.
How Hunters Impacts the Star Wars Universe
While the story of Star Wars: Hunters doesn’t impact the overall narrative of Star Wars, similar to other titles like Star Wars: Outlaws, it does connect certain pieces and raise larger questions. For starters, characters like Diago, who may be Force-sensitive, aren’t a Jedi because he comes from a time when his kind is outlawed and killed. There is also the addition of bounty hunters like Charr and Imara Vex, who thrive at this time, with shows like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett also establishing the growing profession.
Perhaps the biggest question that Hunters’ canon status will also bring is how a character like Rieve can exist when Darth Vader and the Emperor are supposed to be the only full-fledged Sith at this time. Could she have been an Inquisitor? A secret apprentice akin to Starkiller in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed? As more characters are added to Hunters, more questions will likely be raised. The game’s growing popularity could even mean these characters coming to other mediums, thanks to its canon status.
