Dragon Age: The Veilguard Makes the Solas Romance Worth Revisiting

Solas is one of the more controversial characters in the Dragon Age universe. The upcoming release of The Veilguard gives gamers several reasons to revisit a Solas centric romance choice.

The Solas romance has been surrounded by controversy since Dragon Age: Inquisition was released. Many felt it was a wasted romance and paled in comparison to others, like Cullen or Iron Bull. Others thought the Solas romance was instrumental to understanding the politics in the game. With the reveal of the Dragon Age: The Veilguard trailer, new questions and theories have come up about Solas. This is why the Solas romance is worth revisiting.

Did Solas Do the Right Thing?

One question many have had since the release of the Dragon Age DLC Trespasser is if Solas did the right thing. You find out at the end of Trespasser exactly who Solas is and what he has done. At first, he created the Veil to protect the elven race. Now, he realizes he must destroy it and everything else to help them.

Some would argue that the actions are right for one group of people while others claim it is far too extreme. It’s difficult to swallow at face value. Revisiting a romance option with Solas gives insight into his mind. It provides context and explains his views of the past, present, and future of elven society. You may find that you still think he is being too extreme, but at least the revisit of him will give you more clarity.

Does Solas Ever Tell the Truth?

Several romantic scenes between the Inquisitor and Solas concern the history of the elven people. One of the more significant scenes is when Solas details the true meaning of the famous Dalish face tattoo, the vallaslin. Many have questioned if this was an act of kindness, of simple academic interest, or if he was doing it to somehow protect the Inquisitor in the coming battle he would lead.

There is also a question if any of what he says is true. By reading between the lines of his romance dialogue, some believe Solas has a demented view of his people. The elven he remembers are not representative of all elven kind at the time. You may also find his views to be dark and even bigoted. However, you can only form these opinions when you listen and play the Solas romance option.

How Much Does Solas Already Know Will Happen?

One of the more popular questions in forums and among Dragon Age conspiracy theories centers on what Solas knows. Specifically, the theory that Solas has seen everything the gamer goes through in Dragon Age: Inquisition because he is, in fact, a god. The theory also points to a specific statement made by Solas in Trespasser. He says that every other option was worse. How would he know? It could be that he is simply guessing. He may have run different options through his mind and decided that they were all worse. Or, the theory has some truth.

Maybe he has lived the other options, studied them, and made changes. Those who subscribe to the theory believe he has arrived where you are at the beginning of the Inquisition because it’s the plan that works. By keeping that in mind when revisiting the Solas romance, you may find that the theory has legs.

The Solas romance has its good and bad points. Overall, the dialogue is worth the romance option and may play into some aspects of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Is it worth revisiting? Yes. Is it game-changing? It could depend on your outlook on mages and Dragon Age as a whole. Is it entertaining enough to add to your gameplay collection? Absolutely.
