It’s amazing to think what a single radio, a journal, and a few scattered bits of information can do for worldbuilding. If you’re curious about any one of the characters in Firewatch, stick with us till the end as we analyze all the characters in Firewatch and talk about their relevance in regard to Henry.
Full Character List In Firewatch
Warning: The article contains major spoilers for the game itself since I’m describing all characters and the circumstances surrounding their lives.
Henry M. “Hank”
Henry M., alias “Hank,” is the protagonist of Firewatch. He’s a 39-year-old man from Boulder, Colorado, who takes up fire-watching to escape from his troubled life at home.
Henry is mostly a reserved and passive character who reluctantly gets thrown into unpleasant situations. Your choices determine how those situations resolve themselves and how your character develops.
Delilah June A.
Delilah A. is the deuteragonist (meaning secondary protagonist) and a fellow fire-watcher who regularly talks to Henry via the radio. She has an open yet subtle character, regularly flirting with Henry while also concealing information from him on certain matters. One of the main mysteries of the game players get wrapped around is whether you’ll meet Delilah.
Ned Goodwin
Ned Goodwin is the antagonist of Firewatch and the reason for most of Henry’s mischievous happenings.
Ned is a former Vietnam War veteran. His experiences in the war caused him to develop a solitary personality, which is why he took up firewatching as a career. The only other person Ned socializes with is Brian Goodwin, his son.
After a caving accident that ends Brian’s life, Ned completely abandons society and becomes a forest man. His desire to be left alone is the reason for a majority of the events that happen to the player during the game.
Julia M.
Julia is Henry’s wife and his main reason for becoming a firewatchman. Julia is often mentioned throughout the game. Her Alzheimer’s diagnosis is the main reason for the downfall of their marriage and the reason why Henry becomes a firewatchman.
Brian Goodwin
Brian Goodwin is Ned’s son and, similarly to Henry, the reason for Ned’s isolation. Unlike Julia, Brian can actually be “found” during the course of the game.
