Trigger Warning – DualShock Redesign Answers My Prayers!

Why does this triggers suck so badly and why did someone actually green light them?

The things you see above are some of the most poorly conceived triggers for any official console controller I can think of.  No, I am not being harsh – if anything I am being too kind and holding my tongue to be somewhat polite. They are rubbish.

These… special triggers have made me avoid ANY shooter on the PS3, ESPECIALLY those from the game’s earlier days. What’s more, is they have made me not want to try my hand at anything racing related games on the console either. With the triggers becoming a more accepted method for the acceleration in racers, feathering the gas becomes a chore. Who thought this was a good idea?

Why is this thing a massive pile of excrement?

Let’s talk about the shape:

Have you ever seen a gun’s trigger? No? Go play any shooter and look at a trigger.  Now, look at the PS3 controllers trigger.  See the difference?  I FREAKING DO!

When holding an actual gun, you should never have your finger resting on the trigger but for the sake of this example we will pretend you are resting your finger on it at all times.  Now, when you rest your finger on said trigger, it is made in a concave fashion to help hold the finger.  Your finger easily finds its placement on the trigger because of this shape.

Now, look at the Dualshock 3’s R2 and L2 triggers… See what they did wrong?

The triggers are convex and slick.  Your finger, when rapidly tapping, will slide down the face of the trigger toward the bottom and then you need to reposition it. When repositioning your finger, you do not naturally fall into a central point.  You just slide it back up to not really find a comfortable position AGAIN.

I simply can not fathom WHY a human would think this was the best possible choice.

However, there is hope.

Look at that sexy beast.  Mhm, I can’t wait to cradle that in my palms… But wait, what is this?

MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED!

With the new redesign to the Dualshock for the PS4, I am hopeful!  Those look slightly smaller than the triggers as of current, but with the outward curve, it already looks far superior.

On top of that, the new analog sticks look like the have edges that will help your thumb not slip off as much as well.  Also, the grip on the underside is a smart addition.

I will admit that Sony seems to have noticed how bad the DualShock 3 was and now, hopefully, the fourth installation will be able to rival the love I have for the Xbox controller.

Also, I would still like to hold one of these just to see how it felt… Just saying.
