Museum of Modern Art: Pac-Man Next To Picasso

Are video games art? They sure are, but they are also design!
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

When the Museum of Modern Art’s senior curator of architecture and design announced the acquisition of 14 video games in 2012, “all hell broke loose.” In this far-ranging, entertaining, and deeply insightful talk, Paola Antonelli explains why she’s delighted to challenge preconceived ideas about art and galleries, and describes her burning wish to help establish a broader understanding of design. You can find her Ted Talk very informative and hilarious.

Paola believes that design is the highest form of creative expression, and that they are the pinnacle of interactive design. Games like Tetris, Pac-Man, Portal, Flow, Katamari Domacy and even EVE Online are now displayed in the museum as a form of interactive design. Getting support from John Maeda from “Wired” magazine passionately protested that video games belong in the MoMa was only the start of how designers and of course gamers wanted their passion for video games viewed in different ways.

I think we, as a community, should start to share in some of those emotional experiences that we have had through video games. I know that I have moments where I look at still shots from Shadow of the Colossus and find myself remembering all the emotions leading up to each battle. There is something to be said when an image can bring about emotion and memories, if that isn’t art… I don’t know what is.

This is an eye opening TED Talk that benefits anyone involved in our industry and it comes highly recommended!
