Just Add Water Writes to Kojima about Metal Gear Solid Remake

Just Add Water asks Hideo Kojima for the right to do a Metal Gear Solid remake.

Just Add Water has written a letter to Hideo Kojima requesting permission to do a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid. For those that don’t know, Just Add Water is the studio that did Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD.

Why are they asking out of the blue?

It’s not exactly out of the blue. Kojima had been asked by journalist about whether they were remaking Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2, to which Kojima had responded to with a no. “You (the journalist) wanted me to do MGS2 on Fox Engine but I cannot do. I wish if only someone could make MGS1 on Fox Engine.” His translator, however, made it sound like they were searching for a studio to take up the project. Kojima addressed this late last night on his twitter, apologizing for the miscommunication.

Kojima’s last twitter post on the subject was the following, “Well, if there’s some creator or team in this world who has love and passion to remake “MGS1″, I would love to ask for it.”

The Letter

Reading Just Add Water’s open letter gave me the impression that they were misinterpreting what Kojima said.

We read with great excitement on VG247 that you were looking for a studio to work with to develop a Metal Gear Solid remake using the Fox Engine, that your team has been hard at work creating.

However, Kojima’s twitter post looked more like wishful thinking than actually stating that he wanted someone to approach him to do the remake. Just Add Water gave three reasons on why they should undertake this project:

  1. They had experience with big name remakes,
  2. many team members are really big fans with knowledge of the game,
  3. and because “we really, really want to do it.”

Whether it was wishful thinking on Kojima’s part or an actual request, Just Add Water stepped up and made the proposition.
