Today, Nintendo announced that it will discontinue the NES Classic Edition, with the last shipments being sent to retailers throughout the rest of April. After that, they will only be available as long as the remaining supplies last.
In a statement provided to IGN, a Nintendo representative explained further and apologized for the already scarce availability of the system:
“We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”
The representative also stated the NES Classic Edition was never meant to be a long-term and ongoing product, but added additional shipments to their original plans.
The NES Classic originally launched last year on November 10th with 30 classic NES games and save states. After its launch, the NES Classic was plagued by supply problems both in stores and online — leaving many consumers frustrated with their potential purchase.
Nintendo of America has not yet confirmed whether this discontinuation is worldwide or just for the North American region. The company says they have nothing else to announce regarding the NES Classic at this time.
