It’s been an exciting day for Australian gamers, but this takes the cake. The likes of Bioware, Ubisoft, Nintendo, Gearbox and SEGA are all heading to Melbourne next month to partake in Australia’s first PAX event. Ron Gilbert is dropping by, and the Penny Arcade team are hosting a veritable plethora of panels.

With indie gaming showcases, tournaments and demos coming out the wazoo, it looks like the inaugral event is going to be one for the books.

Microsoft will also be present, showcasing the XBOX ONE – or as it’s been semi-affectionately nicknamed here, the XBONE – in Australia for the first time.

Personally, I’m looking forward to getting a closer look at the Australian indie community, and seeing what new innovation we can expect from the horde of smaller developers in the coming months. Some controversy is also to be expected, as while some devs are focusing on the potential of games as an artform and the responsibility they have to their audiences, a panel entitled Why so serious? Has the industry forgotten that games are supposed to be fun? looks to endenger some interesting discussion.
