Older generation games were never developed with the thought of DLC. When the makers of EA and Nintendo developed a game, they thought about it thoroughly and finished all details within the game. Now with the opportunity of DLC, developers can cut corners by ‘adding’ more features that were not available for cushion in the good old days. Not only this, but spending more money on DLC that will only go so far in the game, when more will be added in the future is very extensive on your wallet. Much easier to open up to a game without DLC than one with.
Back to the moral of the article, there are many games out there that have been ‘ruined’ by DLC. I’ll name the top 3 in my opinion that have been scarred.
The Sims
This is a game that has a long history, not only on the PC but broadening onto the GameCube and DS. In the old-days of the Sims, you could simply play the game without ‘needing’ DLC or what they were called… expansion packs. Now they have the Sims store, where it’s almost as if you’re pressured into buying Sims add-ons such as furniture and clothing. It has ruined the Sims franchise, making it seem more money-obsessed instead of being about the game. I find this ruins the theme of the Sims.
Civilization (Revolution)
Yet another game that didn’t need the DLC to make it worth playing. It’s well known for being available as well on the DS, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows Phone/iOS. Recently, it was made available on the PC through Steam has new DLC such as Brave New World and Wonders of the Ancient World. Personally, I’d rather they make another game through Civilization instead of handing me all this DLC. The game is great as is, why not make a Civilization VI instead of just adding to V? I understand that the DLC have added on to the game, but how far will it go before they make a VI?
Call of Duty
Call of Duty was already a very popular game before the DLC. It’s attracted many players by just being submerged into the story of the original Call of Duty. The DLC have only added new maps every month, and for what? A map is a map, and when you’re playing online you’re usually playing different people. Are that many maps really needed, or more overwhelming? As I said, there have been many CoD games in the past, and probably more in the future. But c’mon, let’s not go so crazy with the DLC that we forget more games could be developed.
