Foxes are some of the cutest animals you can tame in Minecraft, and are popular companion pets due to their adorable behaviors. They’re not too hard to find if you know where to look, but you do have to follow specific steps to get one to trust you. We’ll go over how to tame foxes in this guide, from where to find them to what you need to do to make one your friend.
How to Tame Foxes in Minecraft
Where to Find Foxes
So let’s first talk about where you can find foxes, then let’s go into how to tame one to follow you around as a companion pet. All in all, it’s pretty simple, and shouldn’t be too hard to do on a new character.
You can find foxes in two colors in Minecraft:
- Red foxes, which can be found in taiga, grove, and old growth taiga biomes.
- Arctic foxes, which spawn in snowy taiga biomes.
You’ll have an easier time finding foxes at night, as they are mostly nocturnal like in real life.
Arctic foxes are harder to find since they can only be found in snowy taiga biomes, which makes them all that much better to add to your collection!
It’s also good to know that when you breed a red fox and an arctic fox, you have a 50/50 chance of getting a fox kit of either color.
What You Need to Tame a Fox
You need two things to get started. These are:
- A lead (like a leash)
- Two sweet berries
You can gather sweet berries from the sweet berry bushes found scattered around taiga and snowy taiga biomes, which is pretty convenient considering you’ll be able to find foxes in the area.

How to Make a Lead
You will probably have to craft the lead yourself unless you get lucky and find one. You can craft a lead using:
- Four string
- One slimeball
Let’s Get Down to Business: How to Tame
Once you have your berries and lead and have found a group of foxes, follow these steps:
- Give a sweet berry to one fox.
- Give a sweet berry to the second fox.
- Wait for them to breed.
- Attach the lead to the baby fox.
- Walk away.
A fox you find in the wild will never come to trust you, but a newborn fox kit will. This method ensures you get a fox kit that trusts you, but you need to keep the lead on it until it reaches adulthood so it doesn’t run away. Once it’s become a fully grown, you can take the lead off and it will follow you without it.
