After nearly a decade and a fair amount of spinoffs, Kingdom Hearts III is Sora, Donald, and Goofy’s long-awaited return to the big screen. Here’s some good news: series director Tetsuya Nomura has told the L.A. Times that the third main entry will not end the franchise.

“As a core game, [Kingdom Hearts III] is finally the third, and 10 years have passed,” he said through a translator. “I couldn’t call this a trilogy. There have been so many spinoffs. In Kingdom Hearts III, the battles that the characters have been fighting for the past 10 years will come to a conclusion. That is the plan. But the series will continue. Only the particular enemy they have been fighting the past 10 years will come to an end.”

Also of note in the interview: Nomura recommended that fans play the latest entry in the series, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, for an idea of what to expect combat-wise from the next game, though he mentioned that little is concrete and much is subject to change.

“We tried many experiments in [Kingdom Hearts 3D] that will be applied to Kingdom Hearts III,” he said. “If you play 3D, you will get some hint of Kingdom Hearts III.”

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix will be released on the PS3 in September to hold fans over until III drops on the PS4 and Xbox One sometime next year.
