Though we’ve only just recently landed on the Red Planet and started a sustainable colony in Surviving Mars, Paradox Interactive is ready to take the next giant leap in its “Surviving” strategy franchise by bringing things back down to Earth.

Today at PDXcon in Berlin, Germany, the publisher announced Surviving the Aftermath, a post-apocalyptic colony-building sim for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Developed by Iceflake studios, the game is currently in Early Access on the Epic Games store and Xbox Game Preview for $19.99.

As with many Early Access titles, Surviving the Aftermath will leverage community input throughout development. It currently has a release window of “late 2020,” but beyond that, there is no specific date at this time.

Nikhat Ali, the game’s lead producer, said:

Throughout Surviving Mars’ development, we learned the importance of listening to our community and their feedback helped elevate that game to new heights. With Surviving the Aftermath, we want to get our players involved as early as possible so we can make sure we’re making the game they want to play.

We have an ambitious content schedule ahead of us that includes
monthly updates where we will incorporate feedback from our players and we’re confident the team at Iceflake is the right team for the job.

Of that ambition, Surviving the Aftermath is a bit different than your average colony-builder, management sim. While players will still build colonies of over 50 unique buildings from the ashes of a post-apocalyptic wasteland and manage the complex systems Paradox is known for, they will also “go beyond the shelter.”

Teams of Specialists can explore the procedurally generated world outside colonies. There are 48 different Specialists in all, each of which features different motives alongside different strengths and weaknesses.

They gather resources and intelligence, which can be used to further exert dominance over a vast, hazardous map full of bandits and other dangers. They also manage colony production and can fight to protect what players have created.

In a press release, Paradox said that they already have a tentative update roadmap ahead of them, featuring diplomacy, larger tech trees, more combat options between colonies, and much more.

Iceflake Studios’ CEO and Lead Designer Lasse Liljedahl said the team has dreamed about making a game like Surviving the Aftermath for a long time.

Surviving the Aftermath is the game we’ve always wanted to make. When we pitched our plan to Paradox, they recognized our passion and commitment to making this game the best survival colony builder it can be. We’re beyond thrilled to finally share our dream project with the world and to have the support of one of the industry’s leading publishers.

You can pick up Surviving the Aftermath now for PC and Xbox One. Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more on the game as it develops.
