Rumblings of a Gothic remake have been circulating for a while now, steadily growing after the release of a recent playable teaser. Many fans felt it was a good bet development would begin in earnest for a fully redesigned game. They just didn’t know when.
Now, those bets have paid off. THQ Nordic Barcelona has confirmed that fan feedback has been overwhelmingly positive for the short, playable experience that released in December. Full production on a Gothic remake is about to begin.
More than 180,000 people played the demo, which teased a new approach to the classic fantasy title. Following the demo’s completion, more than 43,000 players replied to a survey about the direction of the demo’s gameplay. Of that group, nearly 95% replied that development should be continued in the demo’s style.
The full results of that survey have been made available, and in an interesting twist, the response wasn’t fully driven by nostalgia. The largest share of gamers who responded was in the 22- to 27-year-old age bracket.
Since the original game came out back in 2001, it seems unlikely that younger players in that bracket played Gothic on its original launch. You can check out a full breakdown of the responses for more.
The most recent entry in the series was Gothic 3, which released back in 2006 for PC. It was developed by Piranha Bytes. The previous Gothic titles are still available digitally via GOG and Steam.
