Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are developing a live-action Twisted Metal TV show. Variety first broke the news and said the idea comes from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, both of whom have worked on projects such as Deadpool, Zombieland, Zombieland 2, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and Cowboy Ninja Viking.
Cobra Kai‘s Michael Jonathan Smith will act as writer and executive producer for the series, with Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions as co-executive producers.
Qizilbash said that “We are thrilled to have such a great team working on bringing this iconic game to life for the fans.” Where the Twisted Metal games focus on a yearly tournament where contestants destroy each other’s cars for victory, the adaptation is a bit different.
It’s part action, part comedy following a “motor-mouthed outsider” on a perilous delivery mission — and not just because of Sweet Tooth the psychotic ice cream truck clown. On paper, it sounds more Mad Max than Twisted Metal, but we’ll have to wait and see.
As yet, there’s no word what network Twisted Metal will run on or when filming may begin. The Twisted Metal TV series is just one of PlayStation Productions’ current projects, among which includes a series based on Final Fantasy XIV.
