We all knew that the Chinese game industry was a growing beast, but just how quickly is it expanding? According to the annual China Games Industry Report, 2012 saw the country’s game industry grow 35.1% over the previous year.
The Chinese game industry’s 35.1% growth equaled $9.7 billion in revenue over 2012. $9.1 billion of that number came from online gaming sources — a full 90% of the industry’s revenue in the region.
It’s not a surprise that the majority of the industry in China is dedicated to online gaming. Consoles are a grey area in the region and mobile gaming has yet to catch on. Out of the full revenue total above, only $520 million came from the mobile games market. Quite the change from the North American market, where mobile gaming has a much larger hold on the market.
The China Games Industry Report anticipates that 2013 will be an even busier year, with the industry expecting to grow another 12.4%. Yeesh.
