Obsidian Issues Apology for Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition Performance

The dev team has taken to Reddit to apologize to players for all of the issues that this next-gen refresh has launched with.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition should have been a victory lap for Obsidian Entertainment. Created as a next-gen update/refresh for the hit 2019 action RPG, something has gone wrong with the final version.

Across all platforms, which are PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, players have been experiencing choppy performance, visual glitches, and general bugs that were not present in the original game. Due to the negative feedback from this, Obsidian took to Reddit to issue an apology for the rough state of the game.

The Reddit post from Obsidian Chris reads, “I am sorry that you all have been experiencing performance issues with The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition. I understand how frustrating this can be, and I assure you the team at Private Division is working on getting a patch out as soon as possible. When we have more information about that patch we’ll be sure to let folks know.”

On the game’s official Steam page, Spacer’s Choice is described as, “The Outer Worlds you love, but even better: 2019’s hit RPG has been remastered with better graphics, improved performance, additional animations, higher-res environments, and more.”

This follows for the console versions, which were stated to have improved load times and performance. Sadly, any improvements that are present are marred by the inclusion of many new bugs.

A big point of contention from fans is that this update requires a purchase to access. If you own the main game and both of its DLC expansions, Spacer’s Choice will run you an extra $9.99. This pseudo-GOTY version retails for $60, meaning players without the DLC would need to either spend that amount or grab each pack for a combined $30 with another $10 purchase to upgrade. It’s not a great situation.

It should be noted that the final decision to release Spacer’s Choice comes down to publisher Private Division. The Outer Worlds was Obsidian’s final game before being acquired by Microsoft, so the team likely had little control over the state of this new version. At any rate, this isn’t ideal for Obsidian nor fans of the game but with luck these issues will be ironed out with additional patches.
