Thread of Generation is one of the best Strand Fragments in Destiny 2 Lightfall. Here's how it works.

Destiny 2 Thread of Generation Fragment Explained

Thread of Generation is one of the best Strand Fragments in Destiny 2 Lightfall. Here's how it works.

One of the best Fragments for the Strand subclass in Destiny 2 is Thread of Generation. That’s primarily because of its effect and how important having a charged Grenade is. For most builds, regardless of which class you play, having consistent access to your Grenade is essential, and this Fragment makes it much easier to get them back. Here’s everything you need to know about the Thread of Generation Fragment.

How Thread of Generation Works in Destiny 2

Thread of Generation does precisely what the Fragment description says: dealing damage reduces your Grenade cooldown. As with most things in Destiny 2, how much you gain back and how quickly remains unsaid. So we did a little testing.

With the Thread of Generation Fragment active, it seems that if you’re doing consistent damage to even red-bar enemies, you’ll reduce the time it takes to get your Grenade back by at least 30-40%. We were running 80 Discipline, so our base ability regeneration wasn’t maxed out, and with the Fragment active, we were able to get the Grenade back long before completing the Widow’s Walk Lost Sector in the EDZ.

More thorough testing would be needed to say definitively how effective Thread of Generation is, but even preliminary results showcase its potential.

How to Get Thread of Generation in Destiny 2

If you want Thread of Generation, you’ll need to complete the Lightfall campaign and unlock the Strand subclass. Once that’s done, head to the Pouka Pond to meditate, open the Strand ability unlock menu, and then open the Fragments submenu. Thread of Generation is the first icon on the second row. It will cost you 200 Strand Meditations to unlock.

Getting Strand Meditations is fairly straightforward: simply use Strand throughout the system and complete activities on Neomuna — patrols, Public Events, and the weekly Partition — and earn reputation with Nimbus for several hundred Meditations in short order.

Return to the Pond to unlock the Fragment, then equip it in the Strand subclass menu.

Is Thread of Generation Worth It in Destiny 2?

Yes. Thread of Generation is more than worth it. While many builds have two or more ways to get ability energy back almost instantly, many require a specific gameplay loop to use correctly. Though there are usually failsafe or backup strategies to get back in, if you fail those, you’ll be without ability regen altogether. Thread of Generation bypasses some of that potential downtime.

The Fragment’s effects are constant and passive. There’s no need to do anything to activate it beyond dealing damage — from any source — to your enemies. Damage over time, charged and uncharged Melee damage, Super damage, it doesn’t matter. So long as your enemies are losing health, Thread of Generation will do the work for you.

Hopefully, that makes it easier to choose whether to put Thread of Generation in your next Destiny 2 build. There are few meta options that don’t use it, so we can’t really recommend it enough.
