*UPDATE 2* It has now been confirmed by the Baltimore Sun that Tom Clancy died at Johns Hopkins Hospital last night, Oct 1st after a brief illness.

We are saddened to learn of Tom Clancy’s passing and our condolences go out to his family. Tom Clancy was an extraordinary author with a gift for creating detailed, engrossing fictional stories that captivated audiences around the world.

Tom Clancy, the famous storyteller and inspiration for such revolutionary video games such as Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six is dead according to a tweet by Publishers Weekly. The author, who was 66, founded video game developer, Red Storm Entertainment, which was later bought by Ubisoft. Ubisoft then went on to be one of the industry’s best developers in no small part due to the Splinter Cell franchise.

Here is the tweet that broke the news:

 He was born in Baltimore, Maryland and attended Loyola College. While he was there, he studied Literature and worked as an insurance sales man. Eventually, Clancy also wrote several best-sellers including such novels as Patriot Games, The Sum of All Fears, and The Hunt for Red October.

Details about his death are still a bit unclear but it is known that he died in a hospital in Baltimore. He will be missed. He is one of the greatest writers of the 20th and 21st centuries and his legacy will live on.
