GTA V Breaks More Guinness World Records

There’s no denying that GTA V is the biggest release of the year. Rockstar’s long-running Grand Theft Auto franchise has been a money-maker for the studio for years, and this release is no exception. 

But record-breaking? According to Guinness, since its release Grand Theft Auto V has set six new world records. Before release, GTA V held the honor for “most viewed trailer.” But it has generated more buzz (and records) since the trailer release. 

In the first 24 hours, GTA sold 11.2 million units, netting Rockstar $815.7 million in revenue, with sales reaching $1 billion in 3 days on the market. As for records, GTA  has a few.

1. Best selling action-adventure videogame in 24 hours
2. Best selling videogame in 24 hours
3. Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
4. Highest grossing videogame in 24 hours. 
5. Fastest videogame to gross $1 billion
6. Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours. 

Admittedly, some of these records are effectively the same thing, but it’s still impressive for something  (a month out of the gate no less) to be ranking so highly in the record books. Especially after GTA V became Metacritic’s top ranking game of the all time. 

These figures, according to the Guinness site, “smashes records previously held by the Call of Duty videogame series and blockbuster movies including The Avengers and Avatar.”
